Tony Reyes Trip Report and Fish Count August 15th, 2010

August 23, 2010 – 12:24 pm

I am so thankful to have another fish count and trip report in my hands!  Sometimes these are hard to get.

The Tony Reyes boat just returned from another magical six day fishing excursion in The Sea of Cortez. I love that sea, I have ever since I was a kid. There are so many wonders to be found in it and along it shores. I remember going to “Shell Beach” and looking for giant conch shells and sometimes finding them! Running far out during low tide and gathering clams for dinner with a long stick and nail hammered into it. Lighting fireworks around the campfire while making smores with family and friends. So many fun memories from San Felipe, the same memories we can still make today with our kids.

Now back to the excellent yellowtail fishing this latest Tony trip got into. Yellowtail was the dominating species of the trip and I am just perfectly fine with that! According to the crew of the Tony Reyes, this is the best yellowtail season in memory. There have been tons of large yellows caught and also lost all year long. Nothing is as exciting as a wide open yellowtail bite, its a total adrenaline rush!

Some noted fishing grounds were the San Francisquito Islands as well as Snake Island and the lovely Enchanted Islands. Island fishing is just plain good down there because thats where the fish go for food and shelter.

The weather was great during the entire trip, and that’s a blessing. Personally, I like it warm with a nice cool breeze to cool you off.

Live bait was plentiful and it was very easy to fill the live wells. Some people don’t like making bait at night but personally I love it, it really adds to the whole experience.

Jack Mangan from Riverside caught a beautiful 62 pound grouper, well done Jack!

  2. I was on this trip with two friends Gary and George. Unfortunally Gary had to leave before the boat set sail due to a death in his family. This was our first trip aboard the Toney Reyes and it won’t be our last. The crew was awesome, the food was excellent and the beer was cold. The other passangers were laid back, helpful and we all caught plenty of fish. Met some Tony Reyes pros like Jim, Dave, Don and Jack ( millionaire in disguise ) We will be back next year and years to come. Wow, I bought enough gear to almost sink the Reyes. I learned my lesson for next time.
