Tony Reyes Trip Report and Fish Count May 22nd, 2011

June 7, 2011 – 12:49 pm

May 22nd saw the start of the fourth Tony Reyes fishing trip out of San Felipe. The skies were filled with sunshine and just a bit of wind as the boat left the dock. I love the feeling of leaving the dock, being underway comes with a sense of peace.

The first stop was Diablo on the eastern side of La Guarda. The weather was beautiful with air temperatures in the 70’s all week long. Water temperatures were still a bit cool and the wind was nice and calm.  The second stop was La Raza and it produced great fishing. We caught nice sized yellowtail up to 31 pounds and the boils were plentiful! Its so much fun chasing boils, casting into them and catching big yellowtail as a result. Beautiful 17 pound cabrilla were caught in boils and inside the rocky shoreline. Its amazing how a fish of that size can bend your fishing rod all the way into the water. Cabrilla are one of the most impressive fish in The Sea of Cortez in my opinion. Read the rest of this entry »

Triple Trout Swimbaits Now at The Longfin!

May 27, 2011 – 6:28 pm

We now stock Triple Trout Swimbaits, and they are awesome! The creator of these amazing swimbaits hand crafts each one of these, then hand paints them. They are truly a rare and great bait, he can only make so many at a time. Eric was excited when we were able to bring Triple Trouts to The Longfin and now I can see why, they are very nice baits indeed.

The swimming action they have when they glide through the water is very lifelike and similar to a live trout. They move gracefully and naturally, its no wonder they get bit so hard. The colors schemes that he makes them in are always evolving and custom colors come out often. Colors that he makes in limited supply, that are in our shop right now.

Triple Trout is going to be successful because largemouth bass cannot keep them out of their mouths. Stripers find them irresistible as well. The success fishing stories associated with these Triple Trout baits keep pouring in the door. We of course field test them ourselves and quite honestly, they are in all of our tackle boxes. Get some of these amazing Triple Trout baits while you can, you wont regret it!

Tony Reyes Fishing Report May 1st – May 6th

May 9, 2011 – 10:43 am

The first Tony Reyes trip has returned and the boat will run through November. The water was a little cold and there was some wind the first few days. The boat was chartered was by the amazing radio personality Rick Maxa from the “Let’s Talk Hook Up” radio show.

I don’t have exact counts yet but I have a general report for you guys. They caught yellowtail from the 10 – 20 pound range. Large and medium cabrilla were wrestled in as well. They were able to catch some medium sized white sea bass, I wonder if they fished The Golden Reef for those. Spotted bass and pargo were also landed during the trip.

There was an abundance of small bait in the water but they were unable to catch any to use as bait. Tony expects the next trip to be better as the water warms up and live bait becomes more available. Bring some frozen squid down with you on the trip, it works wonders on the bottom.

April 20, 2011 – 1:22 pm
IRVINE LAKE CRAPPIE GOING WILD; 13-14 RAINBOW TOPS CATCHES The annual late April crappie explosion at Irvine Lake is going off right on time, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. “The crappie bite has busted wide open”, gushed Getty. “There were lots of nice fish being caught, especially at Santiago Flats, Sierra Cove, and along the west shore. Best lures are white or yellow Atomic Tubes. The little 1/32 ounce jigs were best because the fish are mostly shallow, and there are even some sight fish available.” Read the rest of this entry »

G Loomis NRX Rods

April 19, 2011 – 2:24 pm

G Loomis continues to amaze me with their craftsmanship and innovation. The G Loomis NRX Rods are just as good as all the hype you have been hearing about them. The NRX represents years of work all coming up to this one fishing rod – NRX.

We have the G Loomis NRX series rods in stock and I am excited to see how great they are doing. Pair the NRX with a new Shimano Core bait casting reel and you will be in bass fishing heaven! The sensitivity on that combo must be insane. Anytime you are able to pair up a bass rod and reel of that class, you will have arrived.

Please if you have any feedback on the G Loomis NRX series rods, please let us know.

You can learn more about the NRX Bass Rods here: http://www.thelongfin.com/g-loomis-nrx-conventional-rods.html
